Ledge Beach is a great place to go for a drive, it’s not too far and the drive is good although the last section is on gravel. Good to go for a walk on the beach or fish. Very good for Herring Whiting Salmon Trout and big Salmon in season. Late February till July but its fishing so not set in stone. The rocks to the left as you come down from the car park are good with caution. Leather Jackets and other species including Bream and Skip Jack Trevally and Squid are caught here.

So why Boiler Bay or Beach?

Just off shore you will see a old boiler from a shp wrecked there in 1936 she was the Tug Awhina. In 1936 the Awhina was sold for £50 as scrap metal. She was alongside the town jetty at Albany being stripped when she sank in about 14 ft of water. The engines had been dismantled and water entered through the propeller shaft hole.
They sent a diver down and he plugged the leak on the Awhina then she was pumped out by the Bonthorpe, another steam tug. After being put on a mooring and the remaining salvaged parts taken off, the tug was towed by the Bonthorpe to what is now Boiler Baybay just west of Ledge Point and inshore from Gull Rock. Then on the 19 April 1936 she was beached and set on fire. The boiler and parts of the hull can still be seen to this day.
